Hey there, Sreeraj here 👋

If you’ve been fascinated by AI tools like ChatGPT or Google Bard but sometimes find their outputs hit-or-miss, you're not alone. Mastering the art of crafting effective prompts is a game-changer, and today, I’m sharing the ultimate formula to elevate your prompting skills.

The 6 Components of a Perfect Prompt

Every powerful prompt contains these six building blocks:

  1. Task
Start with an action verb (e.g., Generate, Write, Analyze) and clearly define your goal. For instance, “Write a three-month training program for a 70kg male looking to gain 5kg of muscle.”

  2. Context
Provide just enough background to guide the AI. Ask yourself:

    • Who is the user?

    • What does success look like?

    • What constraints exist?

  3. Exemplars
Include examples to guide the output. For example, if refining a resume, show a poorly written bullet point and the desired structure.

  4. Persona
Specify who the AI should emulate. For instance, “Act as a senior product manager presenting to a CEO.”

  5. Format
Visualize the desired output. It could be a table, paragraphs, bullet points, or code. Be explicit, like, “Summarize this feedback in a table with columns for the team, priority, and key takeaways.”

  6. Tone
Define the tone—friendly, formal, enthusiastic, or witty. For example, “Write in a confident yet approachable tone suitable for a new client pitch.”

Why This Formula Works

By combining these components, you’re setting the AI up for success. A detailed, well-structured prompt eliminates ambiguity and focuses the AI’s creativity on delivering exactly what you need.

Example of a Perfect Prompt

Let’s put it all together:

Persona: You are a senior product marketing manager at Apple.
Context: You’ve just launched the Apple Car in collaboration with Tesla, securing 12,000 pre-orders (200% above target).
Task: Write an email to your boss sharing the results.
Format: Include a TL;DR section, project background, business results, and a thank-you to the team.
Tone: Confident yet friendly.

Imagine how polished and on-point the output will be compared to a vague prompt like, “Write an email about my product launch.”

Next Steps

Now that you’ve got the formula, it’s time to practice. Experiment with these components, and let me know what results you get!
